Cheaton Barn – Leominster

A single-storey timber frame dwelling with high ceilings was the optimum solution

Project Name: Cheaton Barn, Leominster

Company: Frame Technologies

Sector: Self Build

Technology: TechVantage™ E

Overview:

Having spent their lives in a bungalow on a smallholding, the couple had ambitions to build a low-maintenance new home. They loved the wonderful rural setting and did not want to relocate, so decided to investigate the potential of developing one of their outbuildings and were advised to apply for planning permission.

Partnership Approach:

After a successful application and spending many months looking for a local specialist timber frame contractor who could add value to the project, Frame Technologies were appointed. Our track record of delivering award-winning, high-performance timber frame homes was a major factor in this decision, together with our partnership approach, which was important as the homeowners wished to be an integral part of the design and building process.

This was a totally new experience for the fledgling self-builders – they did not understand the terminology or the products. They found working with Frame Technologies easy and straightforward, as we fully explained every aspect of the building process in great detail and gave them the information they required to make well-informed decisions.

Meeting The Brief:

After conducting a full site survey of the existing barn and using the latest digital design technology, Frame Technologies identified that a single-storey timber frame dwelling with high ceilings was the optimum solution. The timber frame is complete with a standing seam metal roof which is fully sheathed to hide the steel purlins.

Achieving The Optimum Performance:

Our TechVantage™ E system was the optimum solution to deliver the energy-efficient, low-maintenance new home. An additional liner on the inside of PIR achieves a U-Value of 0.15W/m2K. The rafters were fully filled with glass wool, and a 50mm liner was taped over the joins and service battens to deliver a U-Value of 0.15W/m2K for the roof. Because of the high ceilings, it was critical to have high-performance wall and roof systems to create an airtight building envelope.

The clients were delighted with the outcome:

“Due to their ‘can-do’ approach, we can highly recommend Frame Technologies’ services to those embarking on their self-builder journey. Such levels of continued support take the stress and strain out of the design and construction journey. Now we have moved in, we can fully appreciate the energy-saving benefits their TechVantage™ E system has delivered.”
