SKILLS & TRAINING

Committed to supporting members with high quality training and education

The STA operates the following training solutions available to all members, including some that are requirements of STA Assure accreditation, these include the Timber Frame Competency Award Scheme (TFCAS) and SIPS Competency Award Scheme (SIPCAS).

As part of the STA’s continuous development in the education arena, we are also working on the creation of an Approved Training Provider Network, a bespoke eLearning platform and a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Framework for all members.

Timber Frame
Competency Award Scheme (TFCAS)

The STA has developed four educational Workbooks to provide a consistent approach to the selection, by manufacturing members, of structural timber installers.  The four workbooks focus on the key areas of know-how to ensure the skills deployed on site are at a standard appropriate to the ongoing delivery of the highest standards of structural timber buildings.

Each installer is then required to take an invigilated online test where they are asked key questions relating to the installation of structural timber systems as explained in the workbook.

The four workbooks are described as Health and Safety, Knowledge, Practical and Cavity Barrier installation.  The latter is the most recent addition to the TFCAS process highlighting the importance of correct installation of fire stopping and cavity barriers.

As part of the ongoing STA continuous improvement programme other aspects of the delivery of structural timber buildings will also have individual competency programmes.

Structural Insulated Panel
Competency Award Scheme (SIPCAS)

SIPCAS consists of one module for erector and installer members which has been created to demonstrate the training, skills and competences of existing erectors together with raising the skill levels of any new entrants joining the industry.

Upon successful completion of the practical training workbook and online test, all requirements of SIPCAS will have been met and this achievement will form part of the STA Assure process.
