One Association - one goal

education, training, technical guidance, research and events

Our Role

The STA is growing all the time. Over 350 member companies throughout the construction supply chain currently benefit from the keen technical expertise and insight that our organisation offers. More and more companies are realising the power of being part of an association that represents truly sustainable construction. We are giving the structural timber industry an authoritative, united voice, with which we can influence the future direction of the sector.

STA members are supported through professionally produced education, training, technical guidance, research and events. In addition, we provide all our members with a quality assurance scheme and access to the very latest health and safety training. Perhaps most importantly, we enforce the industry leading initiative, Site Safe, which ensures that member manufacturers working on large projects give clear, concise information and assistance to the principal contractor regarding fire safety on construction sites.

Along with quality and safety, the STA aims to be the focal point of research and insight from which our members can benefit. Outcome from our Technical Committee demonstrates that structural timber is the most sustainable form of construction in the UK. We work closely with the HSE, BRE and Zero Carbon Hub to ensure that we are one step ahead of the sustainability agenda – empowering our members with knowledge and know-how to help them compete against other methods of construction.

How we work..

We encourage our members to take an active role in the Association. To facilitate this process all members are entitled to sit on one of our working groups or committees. All committees are chaired by a member of the Board.

PR & Marketing

The STA is recognised as the authoritative voice of the structural timber industry, providing definitive technical information, plus news and views from across the sector. Continually monitoring the media on behalf of the membership, the STA delivers high level media relations to boost the visibility of the Association, its members and other stakeholders. At the same time, it provides robust, honest repudiation of any media comment that is incorrect or misinformed.

Technical

The Technical Committee drives the outputs which continually demonstrate that timber is the most sustainable form of construction in the UK. We work closely with the HSE, BRE and the Zero Carbon Hub to ensure that we are one step ahead of the sustainability agenda – empowering our members with knowledge and know how that helps them compete against other methods of construction.

We monitor International, European and British Standards and Building Regulations through our technical advocates. We also focus on influencing the European Commission and Parliament, the UK Government, the Scottish Government, the Welsh Government and local government to ensure that all relevant new legislation is practical to implement and is positive towards structural timber. We then provide robust technical guidance on the key aspects for our members.

The Technical committee is chaired by Paul Newman

Health & Safety, Education & Training

The STA is not just the voice of sustainable construction, but also ensures our members have access to the very latest health & safety training. The STA logo is more than a badge; it is a tangible reassurance to the construction industry that using an STA member means delivery of the highest standards, technical excellence and safety on site.

Initiatives such as the Quality Assurance standard and Site Safe have the integrity that satisfies the need to protect our broad membership, while ensuring that the highest service standards are represented throughout the entire UK timber frame industry.

In addition to the practical elements of constructing in timber, the Association has launched the STA Academy which supports our members in the delivery of ‘value-added’ schemes – not bottom price wins.

This extensive committee is chaired by Gerard Lockey
